Congratualtions Graduates! Consider Creating Your Own Job By Starting A Business. Part V: Seek The Support And Counsel of Experienced Professionals.

In this final installment of wishing new graduates bon voyage in starting a business, the word is to make sure that you commit yourself to continuous learning. You don’t have to go back to school, but you do have to stay open to two kinds of information-the things you know you don’t know and the things you don’t know you don’t know. It is especially valuable to find out the things you don’t know you don’t know before they present themselves to trouble you. In this space, we have already discussed reading and peer groups as ways to put yourself in the path of knowledge you need. You also should establish relationships with experienced professionals to advise you-an accountant, an attorney, a technology resource and someone expert in all the issues associated with the bewildering patchwork of rules and laws governing hiring, managing and letting people go. These professionals need not be employees. But if they have some experience in helping other businesses that do what you will be doing, more’s the better. The fact that you are open to advice and knowledge may be one of your most powerful differentiators.  And differentiation is a strategy that is open to every business, small or large, new or old, product or service providers. Bon voyage, and enjoy the journey.
